At 10:40 am. Shelley answered a loud knock on the front door. A team of three men dressed in white, hooded coveralls and two detectives stood outside.

‘Mrs Cassidy?’ the older man said. ‘I’m DS Tom Cross and this is my colleague, DC David Rice.’ He indicated the other men with a sweep of his hand. ‘Scenes of Crime officers Buckley, Briggs and Goodhew. May we come in?’

‘Let me be clear.’ Sparkes gauged the weight of Frank’s iPhone in his palm. ‘Your claim is that this box is a wireless telephone. It transmits on a frequency or signal strength one thousand times greater than my apparatus. If what you say is true...’ The magician glanced from Frank to Cutter. ‘I’m a hairs-breadth away from travelling wherever I wish, and to any time between where I left off and the year two thousand and fourteen.’

‘That’s right,’ Frank said.

‘Don’t look at me.’ Cutter shrugged and looking puzzled, turned his head in the direction of the stairs. ‘Listen,’ he said. ‘Someone’s coming.’ Muffled voices fought against the incessant breeze, reaching the ears of the men in the basement.

Sparkes cocked his head, his eyes narrowed. ‘Who dares to disturb me?’
